Following the fortunes of the news industry can give useful insight into the economic health of any troubled capitalist country.
At the end of last week, Johnston Press reported half-year revenues of £218.6 million; down 25.4 per cent year-on-year. Johnston is based in Scotland and owns national titles there (e.g., The Scostman) as well as numerous regional and local titles throughout the UK
However, it’s in the fine detail that specific areas of economic activity can be assessed. Johnston’s print advertising revenue fell 33.5 per cent and digital advertising revenues declined by 18.8 per cent.
The publisher’s revenue drop further breaks down as follows:

So here’s the skinny thus far.. London is a fun town, reminds me of NYC with a Euro flare… but in these tough economic times for us American folks, by no means is it a good time for us to come and visit this city. Regardless of the exchange rate… which is something like 1:1.75 EVERYTHING here is ridiculously overpriced, to the point of unbelievability.
For example, Yesterday, after walking around for what seemed like hours, from Buckingham palace (we took the tour which was quite cool because it is only open to tourists in the summer months when ol’ Queenie is on vaca at Windsor, mom and I decided to grab a quick bite to eat at Harrod’s. (A world-famous department store equipped with clothes, and food items for the masses) We each ordered a simple reuben sandwich and a diet cola, a seemingly humble lunch in comparision to other options we might have entertained.
Mom enjoying some Extra Cold Fosters
Sitting at a bar stool in the middle of this chaotic department store, youd assume that the price of the meal would be relativel to the surrounding environment. Despite the sensical, the meal ended up costing 35£ which for americans translates to upward of 60$!!!!! FOR LUNCH?!??! This city is fucking ridiculous. It is very hard to find anything cheap, a one way underground ticket that took us 4 stops cost 4£ each, a total of around 16$. Great.
The Famous White Lion Pub
Despite the financial concerns, the city is wonderful, everyone here is very very nice and there are a surprising number of Italian folks, which is helpful because I have been able to brush up on my language skills before my Parma return in about 3 weeks time.
Today is my birthday, the big 2-2…. so I am opting to take a ride on the famous London Eye, maybe see the Tower of London (where Anne Boleyn was beheaded) or perhaps take my chances and go shopping in the Camden (which for local folks seems to be the seedier part of town).
Will update again as soon as I can, unless of course we run out of funding and I hve to resort to vagabond living for the duration of the trip (a distinct possibility).
Things just keep getting better and better with my shares.
Just received notification of another dividend, this time it’s Northern Foods paying out £0.029 per share so a nice little earner for me. The stock itself is starting to show signs of movement in the positive direction as I predicted it would so my stock selection methods are still working well and showing returns on my investments that out strip anything I can get elsewhere.
My tentative toe in the water approach to investments is working well so I’ll be looking to increase my stock options soon with another purchase. I’ve a couple of ideas bubbling away at present but they need more work to finalise which one if any I’ll be picking. In the mean time I’m keeping an eye on my other stocks as I’m getting strong positive moment from both Tesco and Greene King. I feel there is more to go yet with these two but will be hoping to cash in soon, taking a healthy profit for reinvestment.
Since I began studying economic a year ago, I found the subject to be surprisingly interesting and eye-opening. One topic that really got me thinking is the types of economies. I know more than 90% of the world practices market economy and all, but I can’t help but think that a planned economy ain’t that bad. Think of planned economy and you’ll think of communism or Karl Marx and it’s usually not a thought that generates positive responses. Communism is more than often linked with dictatorship, military ruling, lost of freedom, poor countries, low economic development etc etc. All these negative traits cover up the fact that hardy anyone was unemployed or living in extreme poverty under communist rule, everyone had access to basic necessities and equality of wealth was strongly emphasised. To those who have the capability to earn more than others, it is an unfair and annoying ruling however to those who are lowly educated and less fortunate, the communist rule must have been a blessing from God.
When I look at the world today, I can’t deny that market economies have done wonders for countries. Just look at Russia and how developed it is now. The rich are getting richer and MNCs are rapidly taking over the world but the poor are getting poorer too and their numbers are increasing non-stop. There are people who live in so-called ‘rich and developed’ countries that sleep on the streets and beg for money from passerby to buy a meal to keep them alive, people who sell their organs to support their family or people who leave their daughters to die on the street because they cannot afford to support them *think India*. Where is justice in that? What are governments doing about that? What happened to equality? When I see these people, I’m reminded of how unfair market economies are and under communist rule, these people would probably be a lot better off.
So the main question is, should countries practice market economy that allows a minority of people to be rich or communism that ensures that everyone is fed and have a roof over their heads in the expense that no one would ever get rich no matter how hard they work?
Personally, I think that decisions should be made that benefits the majority of society and that is usually the poor (not including countries like Switzerland and Sweden). However, I’m sure the richer part of society will be stomping their feet yelling “TYRANNY!!!” I too have a strong conviction that the people should have absolute say when it comes to the ruling of a country, it is the people after all that make the country but when the voice of country is controlled by upper-class citizens, a market economy wouldn’t do much good for anyone else other than them. I know it’s inevitable but I can’t stand the injustice and the ridiculous wealth gaps, it doesn’t make sense. I think the main culprit is the ignorance of mankind to care for our fellow brothers and sisters.
I know I’m ranting. It’s my first post in half a year and I’m ranting about economic systems, you probably want the last 5 minutes of your life back…lol anyway I’m just happy to finally get this off my chest.
From Paul Kasriel of Northern Trust, via Clusterstock:
Today, we have federal deposit insurance. Therefore, the probabilities and magnitude of depositor runs on banks are much reduced compared with 1933. Yet, we can see “runs” by stockholders and other creditors of banks if there is a suspicion of financial problems. If the Fed is required to publish the names of financial institutions to which it has extended credit and this publication
induces financial institutions to refrain from borrowing from the Fed, one can only speculate if this would be the tinder for another liquidity conflagration in the coming months.
And even in a worst-case scenario, letting insolvent banks fail would be a bad thing, why?
Glenn Beck has uncovered EXTREMELY disturbing information concerning how the White House through the FCC is now in the stages of developing an alternative to our First Amendment right to free speech under the Constitution. Their schemes are to use an ALREADY IN PLACE apparatus to silence opposition voices under the guise of “diversity” and “localism,” and to charge ASTRONOMICAL amounts of money to use a license.
As some have now pointed out, this changes everything. This is not a Republican versus Democrat, Conservative versus Liberal fight, but rather a fight to keep our free market enterprise system under a Constitutional Republic, or turn this country into a tyrannical, socialist, all powerful state where citizens who dissent are fined or put out of business, and are persecuted for their opinions which differ from those of the state.
President Obama has appointed a man named Mark Lloyd to what has been called a “diversity czar” position on at the Federal Communications Commission. I do not think America will forget his name after today.
Lloyd is about to put into place REGULATIONS that will charge radio station owners to pay one years’ operation budget to use the airwaves. I think that ONE REGULATION will put just about everyone in the industry OUT OF BUSINESS, and opposition in American could virtuously disappear very quickly. You see, after radio and TV, they have as their next target, the INTERNET, as per advice from Cass Sunstein.
“So, basically he wants to take over regulation of the entire operation of radio and television station(s),” said Seton Motley, Communications Director for the Media Research Center on Wednesday during Fox News’ Glenn Beck’ show.
“You are about to lose your freedom of speech in this country,” commented Beck. “Please explain to me how this isn’t anti-capitalist, revolutionary in nature, and anti-Constitutional.”
I am concerned that as the details are being uncovered, we will find more and more disturbing pieces of information – one after another – seemingly weaving what seems to be the foreshadow of what we all feared would happen some day in America: BIG BROTHER taking shape in Washington D.C. right now. But I’ll let YOU decide.
“It should be CLEAR BY NOW that MY focus here is NOT FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR THE PRESS…The freedom is all too often an EXAGGERATION…” – Mark Lloyd, prologue to “A Farce”
So, at least we have honesty from this socialist, anti-Constitutional, anti-American appointee of Obama.
“At the very least, blind references to FREEDOM OD SPEECH or the PRESS serve as a DISTRACTION [EDITOR'S NOTE: our First Amendment to our beloved Constitution is a WHAT?!?!? The arrogance and elitist snobbery here is overwhelming to me] from the critical examination of OTHER communications POLICIES.” – Mark Lloyd, prologue to “A Farce”
Lloyd wants to set up 8 “pods” around the country to regulate the following:
Political advertising
Political commentary
number of commercials
Here’s what Obama’s pick for FCC “diversity czar” wrote on 7/24/07 in “Forget the Fairness Doctrine”:
“In our report, we call for ownership of RULES that WE think will create GREATER LOCAL DIVERSITY of programming, news, and commentary. And WE call for more LOCALISM by putting MORE TEETH INTO LICENSING RULES. But we do not call for a return of the fairness doctrine.”
Those TEETH will bite our RIGHT to freedom of speech right out of our precious Constitution, a document which is a CONTRACT between the federal government, the states, and the People of this great land. This contract is now being BROKEN by the federal government, in my opinion.
Listen to even more disturbing information about how the political Left will benefit from this assault on our First Amendment RIGHT to free speech in America.
“…those localism boards are being created right now. Our diversity czar has just proposed that radio companies pay 100% of their operating budget yearly,” said Motley. “That 100% tax would then be TRANSFERRED to STATE-RUN RADIO of NPR…If you can’t pay (the tax)…you’ll LOSE YOUR LICENSE. And that license will then be sold to a MINORITY GROUP.”
According to Motley, “he’s fundamentally OPPOSED to virtuously ANY PRIVATE OWNERSHIP of media.” He also said the Lloyd thinks that “the original sin in communications” was when “President Jefferson relinquished control” of the telegraph, which was controlled by the Post Office.
“His plan is to use the nebulous FCC regulation of media diversity and localism, to travel alternative routes to arrive at the same destination as the ‘(Un)Fairness Doctrine,’ which is SHUT YOU UP by SHUTTING YOU DOWN,” explained Motely.” Then he wants to fine you…if your not meeting HIS definition of media diversity and localism. He’s actually come up with a media and localism MATHEMATICAL EQUATION…it’s just BIZARRE…” Motley said Lloyd is “myopically focused on the racial and ethnic…”
“The things he (Obama) is talking about doing to shut down radio are simply un-American,” charged Rush Limbaugh being interviewed via phone on Fox News’ ‘Hannity’ show. “All of these disasters are what Obama wants. The more crisis the better. The more opportunity for government to say, ‘Let us in and fix the problem,’” continued Rush. “It’s a dangerous time. It’s the MOST DANGEROUS time IN MY LIFE for FREEDOM and LIBERTY in this country.”
Commenting on his radio show, Rush said his “first hour yesterday was chronicling how this man is SYSTEMATICALLY DISMANTLING our ability to gather intelligence to protect ourselves against an attack.” Rush charged that Obama is purportedly “using his Attorney General to make the United States the villain in the world.”
Limbaugh also warned that this “is NOT politics as usual. This is NOT left versus right. This is NOT Republican versus Democrat. This is STATE-ISM – TOTALITARIANISM versus FREEDOM.”
These folks aren’t the only ones seeing something dramatically wrong with America.
Former Bush Administration advisor Carl Rove speaking with Beck said Lloyd “is a COMPLETE LUNATIC if he believes Venezuela is a model we ought to be following. Does Barack Obama understand this?”
“I do think we face a VERY REAL DANGER of CHANGING what our country is by putting in place policies that CENTRALIZE POWER in GOVERNMENT, and centralize power in…Washington,” warned Rove. “And that’s what I’m really worried about with these czars…”
“This is what’s disturbing about this,” Rove also warned, ”this President has CENTRALIZED POWER INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE,” and is “running policy…and running elements of our economy out of the White House.”
Rush opined that the “whole Administration is…as RADICAL and FAR LEFT as any” that our country has “EVER” had. “And what they’re trying to do here in communications is simply STIFLE DISSENTING VOICES. They’re trying to WIPE OUT ANY OPPOSITION,” warned Limbaugh, who says his audience is still growing.
Shifting gears a little to Obamacare and the death of liberal icon Ten Kennedy, Republican Sen. John McCain-(AZ) speaking on Fox News’ ‘Hannity’ show said the American People know what’s happening in other countries, where basically there is a RATIONING of healthcare, particularly when they reach a certain AGE, as to what kind of treatment they can get, and IF they” can get treatment.
Laura Ingraham, a radio talk show host, said that “your seeing the opposition today to LARGE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS, and the large government presence in our lives, that Ted Kennedy championed for his entire life.”
Fox News contributor Bill Kristal speaking on Fox seemed to sum up how I feel about the life of Ted Kennedy when he said that he “wasn’t a big fan of his politics. I didn’t really admire him…He was a liberal. He didn’t change at all – forty-seven years in the United States Senate. And some people might regard that as admirably consistent,” Kristal continued. “And some people might regard that as admirable consistency. I, frankly, would regard that as being BLIND TO REALITY and REFUSING to LEARN from FACTS. He continued to advocate policies that had LONG AGO been PROVEN, in my view, NOT to work.”
Charles Krauthhammer, another Fox New contributor, said Kennedy “was the titular defacto head of the American liberalism as na ideology” and “he represented the EXTREME LIBERALISM, in a sense.”
BTW, Democrat Sen. Robert Bird (WV) said that Obamacare ought to be named after Ted Kennedy, who has been instrumental in pushing for government-run healthcare for all.
In other news, Democrats are still trying to find a way to force Obamacare down our throats, even if it means destroying the entire atmosphere in the Senate.
And in still other news, according to Leslie Page of the group Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), “Literally weeks after they (the federal government) vote to slap a ninety percent tax on any bonus for an executive who takes TARP money, there’re pasing a sort of a bous program for their staffers to pay back student loans on Capital Hill,” she said on Fox News’ ‘Cavuto’ show.
“Up to one-hundred-sixty-eight-thousand dollars the staffers can make. And they can get, from U.S. taxpayers, up to sixty grand…to pay back their student loans.” She said what they did was “beyond hypocritical” and “outrageous,” comparing the situation to “a French revolution.”
Former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey speaking on Fox News seemed to sum up what many people may be starting to believe about President Obama.
“President Obama is a bonifide romantic egalitarian, big government advocate, and he’s not going to CHANGE from that.”
Please continue to pray and do whatever you think is right to oppose Obamacare and other bad policies of the Democrats and the Obama White House. If we lose our freedom of speech, I believe we WILL lose ALL the rest of our rights guaranteed in the Constitution. I have already contacted my Congressman about this extremely important issue concerning free speech. Please do the same.

One of three Florida school officials accused of violating a court order forbidding prayer in school has been exonerated.
Santa Rosa County School District clerical assistant Michelle Winkler has had her day and court and has come out victorious. Winkler was accused of violating a court order that banned school officials from participating in religious activities on campus before, during, and after school hours when she asked her husband who is not employed by the school district to offer prayer at an event.
Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver seems surprised why the matter even made it to court. “And in fact in this case, Michelle Winkler was at an event after school at a Naval facility, off site, that was privately sponsored,” he explains.

Although a few days old, I found this article for todays post. It´s old news that Yahoo and Microsoft is partnering up – but what just hit me is that the forced antitrust review needed for the advertising deal might just be the precursor for a forthcoming merger.
Here is a Associated Press piece by way of The Eagle.
“WASHINGTON — Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp. hope that by joining forces, they can tilt the balance of power in Internet search away from Google Inc. First, however, Yahoo and Microsoft have to convince regulators that their plan won’t hurt online advertisers and consumers.
As the U.S. Justice Department reviews the proposed partnership, approval figures hinge on this question: Will the online ad market be healthier if Google’s dominance is challenged by a single, more muscular rival instead of two scrawnier foes?
The first step toward getting an answer came this month when Microsoft and Yahoo filed paperwork with federal regulators to comply with the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act, an antitrust law governing mergers and alliances between competitors. The Justice Department has until early September to approve the agreement or — as is likely in this case — request additional information.
European regulators are also expected to review the deal. Microsoft and Yahoo are bracing for the probes to extend into early next year, and the outcome is far from certain.
Just nine months ago, Google abandoned its own proposed partnership with Yahoo to avoid a showdown with the government, which had concluded that Google was already too powerful in the lucrative market for selling ads alongside search results.
Google had hoped to extend its reach even further by selling ads next to some of Yahoo’s search results, and in the process, keep Yahoo out of Microsoft’s clutches. Microsoft aggressively lobbied against the partnership.
With the Google-Yahoo inquiry behind them, U.S. antitrust regulators are likely to enter this examination with a clearer definition of the Internet search landscape and a better understanding of how it affects the steadily growing online advertising market.”
Roland Smith, 41, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Chief Judge Garrett E. Brown, Jr., to one-count Information that charges him with bankruptcy fraud.

Later on Smith defaulted on the mortgage payments and foreclosure proceedings commenced by the mortgage lender. Smith filed a bankruptcy petition under the false name and social security number in an attempt to reorganize and discharge the fraudulently-obtained debt.
Judge Brown continued the defendant’s release on a $150,000 bond pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Dec 7, 2009
