Decline of Registered Companies in Spain

For the first time in nine years, due to the still continuing economic crisis the number of registered companies in Spain decline.

On January 1, 2009 there were 3,355,830 companies registered published by the Central Company Directory (DIRCE), which indicates a drop of 1-percent from the start of 2008.

The downturn is to explain by reason of the failing construction industry, a drop of 11.8 percent in the number of companies and those related to the industry. Commerce remains to be the most important sector in Spain, representing 24.8 percent of all the Spanish companies, according to the DIRCE. The service sector declined only a 0.4-percent in 2008.

The province of Catalonia incorporates 619,624 companies, more companies than any other region in Spain, followed by Madrid with 511,804 and Andalusia with 510,072.
